My wife and I looked at Eskaton Monroe Lodge. It was very good, and we were impressed. There were too many restrictions around there, though. We're both very active, and it seems to be for people who need more help. It's a much older community than our ages at the moment. We really liked the people and the facilities there. The apartments were too small for us right now, but overall, we were impressed, particularly with the people managing the place, who were very good. While it's independent living, it's obviously designed for people who are becoming less independent. I think the rooms were limited in their square footage. Everything was basically fewer than 1,000 square feet. They didn't have any two-bedrooms. They were all one-bedroom-and-one-bathroom, I believe. We were looking for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom that was at least 1,100 or 1,200 square feet. The facility was very good, and there was a gym on each floor. The pricing seemed high on the face of it, but there's a lot that they are paying for as part of it, so in actual fact, it was not unreasonable pricing. The area itself was nice, so if you were shopping and so on, there were some restaurants and stores fairly close by, within walking distance for us. The grounds were very nice, as well.

I visited Eskaton Monroe Lodge. I didn't try the food. Staff was very professional, friendly, good sales people. The facility was warm and comfortable. There are a lot of people acted, and walking around when I was there. The apartment was nice. The facility is nice. There was a library on every floor, computer, a business center on every floor. It was okay. It was just that the average age is 85.

Eskaton Monroe Lodge was just the right fit for my parents. It wasn't too posh, and wasn't too rundown. A lot of our friends have family there, so it was a good fit for us. The rooms were very nice and large. We looked at the menu; our friends are happy with the food. The staff members we met have been very nice. We're happy with the facilities; everything is clean, well taken care of, with lots of places to walk, and there's a green space.

I like Eskaton Monroe Lodge. I like its friendly environment, and their price is right. They answered all my questions and addressed all my concerns. There were a lot of trees and it looked safe to walk there. It was homey and I saw a lot of seniors carrying on fun activities. There was a lot of socialization going on, and it was very comfortable. The seniors were coming in and going out with their dogs. Their amenities were really good, they offer medical alert bracelets, and they have a decent library. The seniors were really happy. I just wanted the rooms to be larger. The staff member was very knowledgeable about everything. They had a good food menu, and they had rooms where people sit and watch TV; they load those rooms up with snacks. They have an exercise room, and it's close to UC Davis Hospital.

After 3 months of living here, I know I made the right choice. All of the staff is very accommodating to my various requests. There is always something to do like celebrating Octoberfest with beer and oomph music, various exercise programs and fun games. Best of all I can have my pet cat, Lily, with me. She loves it, too.

I visited Eskaton Monroe Lodge, but it just didn't grab me because it's not what I wanted. They basically import all the maintenance people, so if you have a problem or something, they get contract helpers, which I didn't like. The apartments were almost the same as the ones in other places I visited. They have good facilities, and it's in a good location, because it's not too far off the freeway and there's a big park close by. The residents I spoke to there seemed pretty happy.

Having visited friends in several local senior communities over the past 15 or so years, I've found a very caring staff in almost all, but inevitably heard complaints ranging from boredom to quality food through lack of activities, etc. Now that it was my turn to enter a community, I purposefully wandered into Eskaton as I'd never been to visit there, and the moment I walked in, I sensed something different; something positive. I could not figure it out, but left much to my surprise, having written a check to get listed for admission. It took me three weeks after moving into my unit to identify what was going on. I'm now entering my sixth month and the secret is the sense of community among staff and residents. Everybody is looking out for each other. My problem (Parkinsonism) makes walking/moving difficult (particularly as the night comes on and I get tired). I've now made a few friends and have lots and lots of acquaintances. Almost everyone is smiling at each other and offering to help if it's a 'bad day'. I find the day goes by quickly—there is so much to do. I may have some limitations. Thanks to age and Mr. Parkinson, but this turned out to be an excellent move for me. Not enough time is the best problem I could wish for. P.S. While I spend almost all my time among other residents, the quality of life I've found only works because of the staff (from housekeeper up through management) here is terrific. And for the record, food is g-r-e-a-t. Maybe not quite at the level of high-end restaurants, but far, far from Arby's.

After I sold my house, I know I wanted to live in independent living, preferably in the Land Park area which is where I lived. Eskaton Manor Lodge was my choice. I have not regretted it. The residents are friendly. The staff is very accommodating. The food is outstanding. The grounds are beautiful. I love it here.

After 52 years in my home in Vallejo, I was somewhat reluctant to move. However, Monroe Lodge has exceeded my expectations. The people are friendly, the food is wonderful to activities are abundant. If you're lonely, it's your own fault. I arrived in January 2017 to have been on many outings, picnics, musicals, shopping, etc. The transportation is there for you to use, or stay at home; there are always things to do right here. I feel fortunate that my son found Monroe on the internet. I have made this my home and so happy here.

I must say that Eskaton Monroe Lodge is a bargain. No huge down payment, no big rates, no insistence on paying for three meals a day, professional and friendly staff, etc. Thank you so much

I helped my uncle look at and evaluate several independent-living residences, and we both thought Eskaton Monroe Lodge seemed like a good fit for him. Scott, the sales counselor we worked with, was very helpful (and patient!) while guiding us through the application process, the move-in details, and arranging for new furniture to be set up and arranged. I can't imagine the process having been easier. My uncle has commented on how friendly everyone--staff and residents--have been, and he loves the food! I live on the East Coast, and I feel reassured having my uncle in such a warm and caring environment.

We are so happy to read the transition was smooth for your Uncle. Thank you for the review.

EML has exceeded every expectation I had. At the same time, my reservations have been put to rest. The staff is small, but exceptional in their varied duties and talents. They are all kind and have a needed sense of humor. The kitchen quality had been such a wonderful surprise. We are all very fortunate to be in such good hands.

I liked Eskaton. It was one of the biggest places, and the living room space was nice. The people were very nice. They had a community garden for the residents. However, it was too far from me, and I wanted to be close to mother. The general atmosphere was very friendly, and some of the people that I ran into were friendly and seemed happy.

My mom lived at Eskaton for a little over two years. This is a wonderful facility. There are only 100 residents so everyone truly knows you and it is a very closely knit family. It is a very caring facility that is very well kept, the food is truly delicious, and the activities are endless. You can stay very busy with their daily activities and cultural events. The staff if very caring and proactive. I would definitely recommend this facility to anyone.

They are responsive when it comes to our building and personal needs. The balance of comfort for "home" setting and sophistication (for example dining quality & amenities) is most appealing. The staff and management are attentive and easy to relate to.

My first introduction to the Lodge was the staff who was all very friendly and eager to help me. I was shown and told the location of everything I might need or activities I might want to join. It felt like everyone knew my name. Making friends with other residents was easy. Everyone has been so friendly.

My mother lived at Eskaton Monroe Lodge for 14 years. As her only daughter, my experiences at the Lodge were extensive and extremely positive. What a special place, primarily because of the excellent staff and the delicious food. Yes, what a surprise that the food at such a senior facility would be soooooo good. The planned events are perfect for the residents, with concerts, exercises, special dinner theme events, trips to shopping, special speakers, fashion shows, wine tasting, and so on. Mom had to give up her car after living at the Lodge about 4 years, but for the next 10 years, she was able to easily get rides to doctors' appointments, outside luncheons, theater plays, etc. I know this may seem trivial, but the way the Lodge is decorated for all the holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas, is amazing. At least one or more of the staff has an artistic eye for decor. One more thing, every resident is provided a life alert type of button to wear around the neck. Thank goodness because Mom needed to push that button on two different occasions in the middle of the night and staff were there in moments, followed by the ambulance and a call to me. When my husband and I need more services as we age, we plan to move in to the Lodge. Hence, the five star rating.

Eskaton was OK although I wasn't able to see what the living spaces looks like as they didn't take me anywhere near the living spaces. I only got to see the common areas, and the other thing is they didn't know that I was coming. When I got there, there had been an appointment for me to come, but the information got lost. However, the staff was friendly, and the gardens outside really stood out.
Provider Response
Thank you for visiting Eskaton Monroe Lodge. We are happy to read you enjoyed the gardens. We are sorry you were only able to view the commons areas on the ground floor. You are invited back to tour the residential apartments any time. During a tour you can expect to meet an Eskaton ambassador, a resident who will show you their apartment and answer question on what life is like at the Lodge. It also gives you a friendly face to call upon when you join us at our community. Please call Tristin or Scott at 916-441-1015 to schedule the tour.

My father-in-law lived at Eskaton Monroe Lodge for a little over a year. The staff there were amazing. They could not have been more helpful getting him moved in and moved out and on an everyday basis throughout the year. We had started his move during a health crisis and immediately realized that he'd need more services than were provided in an independent living facility. The staff helped us bring in additional care and helped us maintain it and keep tabs. During the year they put a huge amount of work into helping him meet the requirements of his long term care policy, minimize his cable bill and adjust to life without a car. They were always available to us by phone, email or to meet in person. The facility is very pleasant, clean and well-maintained – they always go all out decorating for holidays. My FIL had one meal a day included with his rent. He always chose dinner and when we would visit we were always happy with the food. Meals are served restaurant-style at tables of four. My FIL is pretty shy so it worked out well that the dining room staff regularly sat him with three super sweet women. When he wasn't well enough to go downstairs he could have his meals brought to his apartment for a small fee. There is a wide variety of activities for residents to choose from on a daily basis (field trips, exercise class, "Koffee Klatch", bingo, musical performances, etc.). There are also storage spaces, a driver available on certain days to run errands, very friendly front desk help and an onsite hair salon. I don't know what we would have done last year without the support of the Eskaton Monroe Lodge staff.
