How Easy is It to Steal a 2010 Audi A4
Nothing feels worse than having your car stolen, especially if it was a super expensive limited-edition model. It almost feels like your first heartbreak, considering it'll be the last thing you think about before you go to sleep.
Of course, older models are easy to steal since they lack a decent anti-theft system. However, in recent years, automakers have made good strides, and most of the modern cars have incredible anti-theft systems in place. In fact, some of the latest modern cars are almost impossible to steal. Don't believe it? Just ask the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is mandated to report theft data. Usually, the cars with the most advanced anti-theft systems don't appear that often on the NHTSA theft report.
Updated January 2022: While vehicle anti-theft technology has been steadily improving over the past few years, criminals still manage to find loopholes and new ways of breaking into and stealing cars. Hence, we've updated this list with new, up-to-date information regarding keyless entry and provided some of the most secure cars in 2021.
Just as the automakers spend a lot of time in research, thieves also spend the time to come up with ways to bypass the latest technologies. Remember, in a world full of infinite possibilities, there's nothing impossible. You'd be surprised there are people on this planet who can try to steal 'The Beast' just for bragging rights.
However, what are the cars that any professional car thief would find very hard to steal due to their unique features? Here's a list of 15 cars that no sane car thief would want to target.
15 Tesla Model S
Not only is the Model S still one of the best electric cars you can buy in 2022 but it's also one of the most secure. The most obvious reason why someone wouldn't want to steal a Tesla Model S is that the owner can monitor the whereabouts of the car through a smartphone. But aren't most cars like that anyway? Not really. If a thief hacks the system or disconnects the tracker, a signal is sent to Tesla. Not to forget, owners use a key fob to unlock it in close proximity. Even if you do manage to steal a Tesla Model S and escape the cops without the charge running low, just remember, there are very few Tesla cars on the road, and most likely, you won't get that far.
14 Jaguar XF
If your Jaguar XF car goes missing, you only need to call the In-Control center, then record a statement with the police and wait.
In 2017, the clever app helped the Yorkshire police in tracking and recovering a car stolen from a managing director of a Technical firm. The app showed the time the car was stolen and the fuel consumed.
How cool is that? Additionally, once you double-lock the Jaguar XF, the car cannot be unlocked or started; even if thieves break into the car, they cannot start it.
13 Tesla Model X
The Model S's more affordable crossover sibling boasts similar levels of security. Tesla's cars are exceedingly difficult to steal because of features such as GPS tracking and so-called "Sentry Mode" where the vehicle's cameras record its surroundings even when it's turned off, ready to notify the owner in case of any suspicious activity around the car.
And indeed, according to a study by HLDI, Teslas are among the least-stolen vehicles, with the Model S and Model X boasting a relative claim rate of 11 and 12, respectively, where the 100 represents the average.
12 Land Rover Discovery
With keyless entry being increasingly used in cars, thieves have found a way to unlock and drive off in cars by using a signal amplifier that pickups up the key's signal and uses it to unlock the car even if the owner is not in proximity.
However, not only is the new Discovery hard to lockpick, but it also uses ultra-wide-band radio technology that simultaneously transmits over a vast range of frequencies, rendering any relay device used by the thieves unable to pick up the key's signal.
11 BMW X3
BMW uses a different approach to the issue of using relays to amplify the signal of the key. Cars like the new X3 come with a system that automatically stops the signal coming from the key if the key's been stationary for a certain amount of time, using motion sensor technology. This would be in cases where the key is not in the owner's pocket or at least if the owner has been in one place for a few minutes. And without the signal from the key, it's not only impossible to enter the vehicle, it's virtually impossible to drive off.
10 Nissan Leaf
The Nissan Leaf made this list? Seriously? Okay, before you dismiss the Nissan Leaf, you have to look at the statistics, and as they say, numbers don't lie. First, if the key isn't within a close range, you cannot start the engine or move the car at neutral. The lack of transmission is really important and always a hard nut to crack for the thieves. Moreover, the GPS tracking system is very responsive when tracking down the whereabouts of the car. In fact, most car thieves would rather steal the spare parts than the whole car since they know the risks.
9 Audi A4
Did you know the theft rate of the Audi A4 is very low due to the modern anti-theft devices fitted in it? One of the outstanding security features is that the keys to the Audi A4 have a chip that makes it harder to start it with other equipment. The keys have a chip, and it's coded into the ECU. This innovative technology makes it very difficult for thieves to use plastic keys when starting the Audi A4. The only way you can steal this car is by towing it, which is one hell of a process and can attract a lot of attention.
8 Mercedes-Benz GL 550 By TAC
How do you check if your car is secure from outside attack? Sit in a car, and let somebody shoot directly at you from the outside with an AK-47. That's exactly what the owner of the Texas Armoring Corporation (TAC) did with a Mercedes-Benz GL 550 they had upgraded for security. Of course, the company's CEO came out unscathed since the bullets bounced right off the windshield. So secure was the CEO in the car that he didn't even flinch. Now that's a car you can drive anywhere without getting worried that a car robber will threaten you with a gun from the outside to surrender.
7 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG By Inkas
Apparently, there's an armored version of the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG upgraded by Inkas that doesn't come cheap. Of course, a Mercedes that comes equipped with bulletproof glass, solid armor that can withstand bullets from a shotgun, and a bottom steel plate that can survive a grenade explosion is definitely targeted for the very few people who can afford it. It's an impenetrable fortress of a car. The real question is what kind of a person would have the guts to steal from somebody who owns a car like that? Maybe it could be John Wick.
6 Volkswagen Tiguan
There's a reason why the Volkswagen Tiguan has won various awards for the most secure car. Not many cars have alarm systems that can match up to the Volkswagen Tiguan.
The electronic engine immobilizer has also contributed to the low car-theft rate that this car has recorded since it disallows the engine to start with a different key.
Additionally, the Volkswagen Tiguan allows the owner to access the vehicle via a smartphone app, which also features a stolen-vehicle locator that can help trace the vehicle in case of theft or robbery.
5 Hyundai Tucson
Although the engine performance of the Hyundai Tucson was considered below average by most car critic reviews, the anti-theft system doesn't disappoint. Most people know that the quickest way to disable a car alarm is to cut off the wires behind the horn, but the Hyundai Tucson doesn't make it so obvious; you have a better chance chasing the wind than disabling the alarm system of the Hyundai Tucson. Of course, there's also a transponder immobilizer, which would make any car thief sweat in embarrassment. Even Carl Johnson from Grand Theft Auto would have a hard time getting away with a Hyundai Tucson.
4 The Knight XV
At a price tag of $800,000, the Knight XV is one of the most expensive SUV vehicles in the world, and it's definitely worth the price. Any hijacker with a malicious motive who'd try to point a gun to the driver from outside would be in for a rude shock. That's because the Knight XV is bulletproof from the body to the glass. Even an RPG missile couldn't destroy a Knight XV. Additionally, there are cameras mounted on every corner of the Knight XV, making it almost impossible for any thief or hijacker to sneak in without being spotted.
3 Lexus HS 250H
For those who own a Lexus HS 250H, the last thing they want is to misplace the car keys. Why is that?
You know how in the movies they pull up the buttons in the door frame using a wire? Apparently, it's almost impossible to do that on the Lexus HS 250H.
There's a feature that enables the unlock buttons to drop as soon as they're pulled up. Good luck to any thief trying to steal the Lexus HS 250H using that pull-up method without having to stay in the same place for hours.
2 Google Self-driving Car
Otherwise known as 'Waymo,' the Google self-driving car is coming into the market earlier than expected. Thanks to the autonomous technology, the car is equipped with an all-rounded camera and motion sensors, making it almost impossible for a car thief to approach it without being recorded. Not to mention, Google is one of the biggest technology companies in the world, and they can easily locate anybody on the planet. Of course, unlike a manual car, a self-driving car cannot just disappear off the parking lot since it can identify its owner. Perhaps the only way the Google self-driving car can be stolen is through hacking.
1 Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster
If you want to make a car impossible to steal, send it into space. That's exactly what Elon Musk did. It's not like it was under a level-10 threat of getting stolen anyway, but that Tesla Roadster will never be forgotten by the history books. It's currently somewhere floating in space more than 140 million miles away from the Earth and on its way to Mars. The only possible way the 'Starman' would get stolen is if it was abducted by aliens. For anybody out there that wants to get it, go try your hardest, and it's all yours.
